DRIVERS ALERT: SLOW DOWN AND PAY ATTENTION, WILL YOU! PASSENGERS BE OBSERVANT!!!
TANKER EXPLOSION IN LAGOS.

Lagosians are still trying to relieving the grim images from the 'June 28, 2018'  ‘Otedola bridge’ tank explosion, the details, which continue to mesmerize this highly populated city of 20 million residents

A first-hand video recording of how the explosion ensued is being circulated around our social media platforms(shown below). The driver might have lost control of his brakes or perhaps might have had its gear on ‘reverse’ accidentally- we are not sure. We can see that the driver and his colleague were trying to stop the tanker, which was carrying a 32,000-litre tank full of petrol(highly flammable and dangerous liquid), with an object (looks like an old tyre), from rolling backwards or moving out of control. From the video, their attempt failed too and it was too late..

We know that what probably happened was that the tanker now in ‘high speed’ turned on its side and the petrol started to find its way out of the tanker unto the long stretch of road that was now jammed with cars before it bursted into flames. Those that were smart enough to run to find cover very far away made it alive and those ‘innocent’ ones that stayed in their cars and hoped that the traffic ahead will clear off met their unfortunate death as they burned away.  Of course the tragic result was what residents saw in the news..loss of lives and property; vivid and gory images that some residents or ‘followers’ are still trying to ‘get out of our heads.’

Truth be told, some drivers and even car owners in Nigeria are careless and don’t take care of their vehicles by conducting regularly assessment or maintenance of key parts of their vehicles at the mechanic. Regular car maintenance is akin to a man getting a regular hair cut or a woman getting her hair done in the salon every other week.

We must be aware of our surroundings when we drive on Lagos roads- really all roads. All drivers, particularly Nigerian drivers, need ‘defensive driving’ courses on a regular basis. Lagos, on a normal week day, has a congestion of cars, trucks, trailers and tankers on Its roads, which are narrow and, many times, broken: Drivers, look not only forward when driving but in your side mirrors and your rear mirror and, please, slow down!!

Let us be careful not to allow the fear of these things happening around us to overtake us because the fear of a problem is worse that the problem itself, but, instead, let us take some moments to see God’s direction for our every day actions or decisons. We are learning that our security lies not necessarily in the controls that we put in place but in God directing us in the way to go. May you and my steps and actions be ordered this week. and may God continue to have mercy on us all.
