The Yale School of Management Pre-MBA Leadership Program is a highly selective, two-week summer program aimed at college sophomores, juniors and seniors and recent college graduates from populations typically under-represented in management education. We introduce you to the fundamentals of management education and give you the tools necessary to hone your individual leadership skills.

This emphasis on leadership flows from the mission of the School of Management: to educate leaders for business and society. When you know how to inspire people, as well as manage capital, materials and ideas, you can become a more potent agent of change. After completing this program, you will return to your campus and your community with a (re)focused sense of purpose that can guide you for many years to come.

Whether or not you decide to pursue an MBA – at Yale or elsewhere – the Yale School of Management Pre-MBA Leadership Program will not only develop your practical knowledge of business and management, but also inspire you to develop and draw upon your leadership abilities in order to make a positive impact – in your personal and professional endeavors, and in the life of your community.

Detroit Lions take BYU DE Ansah of Ghana No. 5 in draft

Ziggy Ansah was born and raised in Ghana, playing soccer and shooting hoops without ever seeing a snap of football.

When he moved to the United States in 2008, some missionaries suggested he attend Brigham Young and try out for the basketball team. He fell short there, but was willing to listen again when friends persuaded him to play football for the first time in 2010.

It has paid off and then some: On Thursday night, the Detroit Lions made him the No. 5 overall draft pick.

"It's been a humbling experience,'' Ansah said with a thick accent on a conference call with Detroit-area reporters. "A crazy journey.''

What if someone told him a few years ago he would end up being drafted fifth overall in 2013? "I would be like, `I don't know what you're thinking,''' Ansah said.

If Ansah doesn't play up to his potential, some people may be saying the same thing about the gamble the Lions took with an inexperienced player.

Detroit desperately needed an offensive tackle, but three were drafted within the first four picks. The franchise's decision-makers knew they also had a glaring void at defensive end. Instead of trading down to acquire additional picks, the Lions stuck with their slot and took a player they evaluated up close for a week at the Senior Bowl.

"He's the best player available,'' Lions general manager Martin Mayhew said. "And, he fills a need. This was an opportunity where the grade matched up with the need and it worked out great for us.''

Detroit didn't re-sign defensive end Cliff Avril, who joined Seattle in free agency, and cut its other starting defensive end, Kyle Vanden Bosch, from last year's 4-12 team.

The Lions' poor season put them in a position to coach a team at the Senior Bowl and they took advantage, getting to know an intriguing player in a way no other team in the league could've this offseason.

It eased any concern Mayhew had about a player very new to the game.

"If we didn't have the opportunity to coach him at the Senior Bowl, that would have been a bigger issue,'' Mayhew said. "But we had the opportunity to work with him and teach him and we saw the way that he could learn, how quickly he picks things up and we saw the impact that he had in the game so we felt very comfortable with him.''

Ansah, whose first name is Ezekiel, didn't know how to put on shoulder pads just three years ago.

"He had no idea,'' BYU center Braden Hansen recalled last season.

Slowly, he turned himself into a player widely expected to be among the first chosen Thursday night - and he was soon after Detroit was on the clock.

Now, the 6-foot-5, 271-pound Ansah has got a great shot to start on an NFL team.

"We didn't draft him to be a project,'' Detroit coach Jim Schwartz said.

Ansah should be able to benefit from playing alongside one of the league's best tandem of defensive tackles - Ndamukong Suh and Nick Fairley - that will put him in one-one-situations when he's trying to sack quarterbacks.

"I just can't wait to be a part of that line,'' Ansah said.

Ansah's athletic ability could create mismatches that Detroit's shaky defense needs next season.

He ran the 40-yard dash in 4.63 seconds at the NFL Combine and had a 34.5-inch vertical leap. In track at BYU, he ran the 200-meter dash in less than 22 seconds and had a sub-11-second 100-meter dash.

"Phenomenal, phenomenal athlete,'' Mayhew said.

Impressive person, too.

The actuarial science major, the youngest of five children, speaks two Ghanaian dialects and hopes his unique path inspires an entire continent .

"One thing I want to do is just to be an ambassador with the NFL and bring the game back to Ghana because I know that there are little kids back home that are going to be pretty good at this game,'' Ansah said. "I can try to introduce the game to the people in Africa.''

Grapes, owing to their high nutrient content, play an important role in ensuring a healthy and robust life, including having anticancer benefits

Benefits: Some of the health benefits of grapes include the following:

Asthma: Due to its eminent therapeutic value, grapes can be used for cure of asthma. In addition to it, the assimilatory power of grapes is also higher. It increases the moisture present in lungs.

Heart diseases: Grapes increase the nitric oxide levels in the blood, which prevents blood clots thereby reducing the chances of heart attacks. In addition the antioxidant present in grapes prevents the oxidation of LDL cholesterol, which blocks the blood vessels.

Migraine: Ripe grape juice is an important home remedy for curing migraine. It should be taken early in the morning, without mixing additional water.

Constipation: Grapes are very effective in overcoming constipation. They are considered as a laxative food, as they contain organic acid, sugar and cellulose. They also relieve chronic constipation by toning up intestine and stomach.

Indigestion: Grapes play an important role in dyspepsia. They relieve heat and cure indigestion and irritation of the stomach. They are also preferred as they constitute a light food.

Fatigue: Light and white grape juice replenishes the iron content present in the body and prevents fatigue. Though, the dark grape juice might not give an iron boost and on the other hand, decrease the iron levels. Drinking grape juice also provides you with instant energy. The anti-oxidants present in grapes also provide the needed boost to your immune system.

Kidney disorders: Grapes can substantially reduce the acidity of the uric acid and helps in the elimination of the acid from the system, thereby reducing the work pressure of kidneys.

Breast cancer: Through a latest study, it has been discovered that purple colored Concord grape juice helps in preventing breast cancer. Significant reduction in mammary tumor mass of laboratory rats was seen after they were fed the grape juice on the experimental basis.

Alzheimer’s disease: Resveratrol, a beneficial polyphenol present in grapes reduces the levels of amyloidal-beta peptides in patients with Alzheimer’s disease. Studies suggest that grapes can enhance brain health and stall the onset of neurodegenerative diseases.

Macular degeneration: Grapes can prevent the age related loss of vision or macular degeneration. Three servings of grapes a day can reduce the risks of macular degeneration by over 36 %.

Prevents cataract: Flavonoids present in grapes have antioxidants, which can reduce and fight the damage caused by free radicals such as cataract apart from cardiovascular diseases, cancer, and age related problems.

Blood cholesterol: Grapes contain a compound called pterostilbene, which has the capacity to bring down cholesterol level. Saponins present in grape skin can also prevent the absorption of cholesterol by binding with it.

Antibacterial activity: Red grapes have strong antibacterial and antiviral properties and can protect you from infections. They have a strong antiviral property against poliovirus and herpes simplex virus.

Anticancer properties: Grapes are found to have strong anti cancer properties due to the anti-inflammatory effect of resveratrol present in grapes. It is particularly effective in colorectal cancer and breast cancer. Anthocyanins and proanthocyanidins present in grapes have properties of an anti-proliferate and can inhibit the growth of cancer causing agents. Grape juice not just prevents the risk of cancer but also suppresses the growth and propagation of cancer cells. The pigments contained in grapes enhance the overall immunity of the body.

Thus, grapes play a pivotal role in preventing innumerable health disorders and can be used as home based remedies for several ailments. Dried grapes, known as raisins, are extremely nutritious and help in many disorders including constipation, acidosis, anemia, fever, sexual weakness and help in gaining weight and eye care.

In Nigeria, a gold rush is poisoning children

Processing gold without modern machinery is leading to "worst lead-poisoning epidemic in modern history." More than 460 children have died.

Every day, a white-dressed figure wanders around the gold-mining site of Bagega, a village in northwestern Nigeria. Lean and middle-aged, perfectly dressed in traditional attire, his black-and-white leather shoes in stark contrast to the bare and dusty feet of the miners, he inspects every piece of gold extracted by the hundreds of men who work under him.

In a space as big as two soccer fields, scores of young men crush, grind and wash gold stones, sheltered from the scorching tropical sun by makeshift, wooden sheds. Some as young as 5, they work from eight in the morning until sundown, united by a common dream: to “hit the jackpot” and become as rich as the “white man,” Alhaji Adamou Tsiko, chairman of the Bagega Gold Miners Association.

Until five years ago, Bagega was just one of the many countryside villages dotting Zamfara, one of the northernmost and poorest states in Nigeria. With nothing more than a rural clinic, a school, a mosque and a few hundred mud houses, the village’s 8,000 inhabitants relied on subsistence farming to feed their children.

“Everyone knew there was gold in the region, but people didn’t care,” says Alhaji Jibril, the village chief, sitting in his “office,” a simple mat under a big tree in front of his house. Then, the economic crisis hit and the price of gold started climbing. In a matter of months, Bagega was at the centre of a new gold rush.

Ibrahim Abubakar, 22, came close to realizing his dream when he and some other miners discovered 330 grams of gold in just a few days, earning more than $9,300 to be split among eight families. It is a huge amount of money in a region where 70 per cent of the population lives on less than $2 a day.

“Life was good then,” he says of the time two years ago.“We even managed to buy a pickup.” Then his 20-month-old son Abdelmajid developed a high fever and started having convulsions. The next morning, he was dead. In less than a week, seven other children died after experiencing the same symptoms.

Bagega had discovered the dark side of gold.

“I heard about lead poisoning, but I don’t care about it. I want to go to Mecca, and this is the only job that allows me to chase that dream,” Mahmoud Aliou a 38-year-old Muslim miner

Sitting in the courtyard of her house in nearby Abare, 25-year-old Asuya Surajo is cooking cassava. On her lap is 4-year-old Naimaatu, wearing a black and blue dress. She is blind in her right eye and her limbs are lifeless. There is a thread of saliva coming out of her mouth. “She got paralyzed in just one night, when she was 18 months old,” says Asuya, who has lost six children because of miscarriages and early deaths.

Naimaatu is among the few survivors of what Human Rights Watch has called “the worst lead poisoning epidemic in modern history.” Since the beginning of 2010, about 460 children under the age of 5 have died in eight villages around Abare and Bagega. Another 5,000 have been affected by exposure.

When the death toll started to rise, the villagers thought they were victims of an evil spirit. It took a team of experts, led by the medical organization Médecins Sans Frontières(MSF), to determine that the deaths were a direct consequence of the gold extraction.

“When we first arrived in 2010 in Yargalma (one of the eight villages), 43 per cent of kids under 5 were already dead,” says Ivan Gayton, the Nigeria head of mission for MSF. “The international level of concern for lead poisoning in the blood is 10 micrograms per decilitre. At 45, you start having permanent brain damage. Some of the kids had levels as high as 700.”

At that time, Asuya’s husband was a miner. Like Abubakar, he used to bring the stones home, where Asuya would crush and grind them into dust to search of gold. But the stones contained deadly lead oxides and carbonates — and those particles would spread in the dust to be inhaled or ingested. Lead poisoning is particularly lethal for children under five because their developing bodies can absorb between 40 per cent and 50 per cent of the lead, compared with 10 per cent for adults, causing permanent damage to the brain and nervous system.

MSF is still treating more than 2,000 children in seven villages, including Abare. Contaminated topsoil has been removed and gold processing has been banned from homes. These simple steps have helped lower child mortality in those villages from 43 per cent to two per cent.

But not in Bagega, which is as big as the other seven villages put together. When the funds for the cleanup (allocated by a coalition of international donors and Nigerian authorities) ran out in 2011, the work stopped. The next phase will be funded by the Nigerian government, which only released the necessary $5.3 million at the end of January. The team is now in a race against time, having to clean up 380 compounds before the start of the next rainy season in five months, when the roads to Bagega become inaccessible.

MSF cannot treat the 1,500 children of Bagega before the cleanup is completed; the chelation therapy is useless if patients go back to a contaminated environment. Until that time, villagers will have to choose between their dreams of wealth and the health of their kids.

A few months ago, the Zamfara state government decided to ban gold mining. The measure proved useless, since most of the gold activity is unregulated and the people in Bagega were not offered any viable alternative.

“I heard about lead poisoning, but I don’t care about it,” says Mahmoud Aliou, a 38-year-old Muslim gold miner. “I want to go to Mecca, and this is the only job that allows me to chase that dream.”

As long as global demand keeps prices up, the gold rush is unlikely to end. On the contrary, according to a new study by Dr. Abdulsalami Nasidi, the lead poisoning emergency co-ordinator for the Nigerian presidency, at least 10 new contaminated villages have been discovered in Zamfara, all of them far from the mining sites. “They buy the ore and bring it to their villages to process it. They are after the gold rush as well.”

Like the other villages, Bagega’s gold-processing site has been moved outside town. But many miners still come home with clothes full of dust. Many are children, who clean themselves in contaminated pools, the same water used to wash the gold dust. Some, like Mamadou Sala, who came from Niger with his family, are as young as 6; some have dropped out of school, like 16-year-old Lawali Gadu. His dream is to become a professional football player like his idol, Kevin-Prince Boateng, the Ghanaian AC Milan midfielder.

Mining experts say with more modern technology (such as wet grinding machines that wouldn’t allow the contaminated dust to spread into the air), mining could continue without health hazards. In Bagega, nobody can afford that equipment.

So, the villagers remain caught in a cruel paradox: to provide food for their kids they have to keep mining, the same activity that is killing them.

A dark cloud will loom over the gold villages for some time. Studies are being conducted to assess the long-term effects that lead poisoning of such magnitude might have on adults, livestock, land and water.

Moreover, the chelation therapy will take several years to complete. So far, MSF has worked for free, but this is unlikely to last, given the cost.

The only option for Asuya and her family is to wait and see. Her husband has returned to farming, their dreams of wealth now a nightmare.

“We never got any support from the authorities and we wouldn’t know how to pay for those medicines,” she says, her dark, expressive eyes scanning the mineral-rich hills surrounding Abare.
