8 wasted years 

In between my busy days during the week, occasionally, I have had the time to resort to catching a ’Taxify’ or an ‘Uber,’ especially when I have to juggle between a late afternoon pick-up of my children from school, rushing for a client meeting or simply trying to get to a social gathering that I have been invited to. 

So a few days ago, I ordered Taxify, this time, to get me to the Murtala Mohammed Airport on a late Friday evening.’ I got into the car, exchanged pleasantries with my driver and decided to chat as we were going to be in the car for a long, long ride (plus I endeavor to  learn a thing or two about every individual that I meet for the first time). “How is business...?” I asked. ‘It is going okay,’ he replied, and we continued to talk about the the Taxify and Uber businesses specifically and how they are impacting transportation of individuals across Lagos, a mega city that is full of trading opportunities but quite congested and stressful to live and work in. As we progressed in our conversation, I realized that my driver spoke impeccable English and as we continued to talk, he stated that ‘this is my first real job (driving a Taxify/Uber authorized vehicle) after graduating from college/the University 8 years ago

and then concluded with a statement.. ‘8 wasted years..’

I then began to think to myself as I shook my head.. Awful, isn’t it? It was ‘8 wasted years’  for this gentleman and several others or even more for some. Okay, for a second, let’s not go through the blame game of how he could have learned a trade or perhaps pursued a masters degree or how the government could have come up with a solution/system to solving the long standing unemployment problem in Nigeria, but instead, let’s ask ourselves, how can we avoid ‘8 wasted years’ for many more graduates that will graduate seconds, minutes, hours, days, months and years from the moment that you are reading this... Again, how can you and I stop or prevent  another graduate from getting into the quagmire of ‘8 wasted years?’ I welcome your thoughts.

Chukwuemeka CHUKWU (Class'16) is a student of architecture as a major and fine art as a minor in a US university.  He works with mixed media like basswood for architecture models and foam board for large scale paintings. Under fine art he does work illustrating the present culture of Nigeria mixing with advancement of technology that may exist far into the future like the year 3099. JOB DESCRIPTION: 

A sales manager will be responsible for establishing sales objectives by forecasting and developing annual sales quotas; projecting expected sales volume and profit for existing and new products.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Work with the Dealer to device realistic and workable sales goals and objectives by forecasting and developing monthly sales targets; projecting expected sales volume and ensuring the goals are met.
• Mobilize the distributors to ensure they meet these goals in unison with their teams.
• Implement and device sales programs by developing field sales action plans.
• Maintain and work up training needs for the sales consultants to improve sales efforts.
• Maintain product and technical knowledge by attending workshops; reviewing publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional bodies.
• Contribute to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed.
• Coordinate and motivate the consultants to ensure they are properly equipped and supported to achieve their sales goals.
• Build a database of customers on installment payments with a view to closing and wrapping up the transaction and working alongside their consultants.
• Continuously coordinate the Business Opportunity Meetings alongside the culinary shows to ensure continuous sales are exceeded.
• Devise grassroot strategy in achieving the set targets and recommending new ways of ensuring the goals are met consistently.

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:

• BS.c in relevant discipline
• Masters, MBA in relevant discipline
• 5years in a supervisory/ leadership role
• PC proficiency and strong working knowledge of Microsoft Excel,h Word and Power Point, Google and CRM knowledge is essential.

• Ability to build a strong relationship with your team
• Must be disciplined and committed
• Strong interpersonal skills and ability to communicate well  

Salary- 100K-150K plus bonus but negotiable
